Just Watched: Red

Just Watched: Red

This is the best movie Bruce Willis has made in ages.  Unfortunately he's set the bar so low this movie didn't have to be very good for that to be true.  So it's not an awesome film but I did enjoy it more than I expected to.

In case you don't know already; RED is an acronym for 'Retired Extremely Dangerous' and it's referring to Willis and his gaggle of ex-CIA goon friends who are forced to come out of retirement when someone starts trying to kill them.

As I watched this film I kept thinking of the movie Space Cowboys and how this falls in the genre of rolling out past-their-prime action heros to do-it one last time.   Usually those films rely heavily on a nostalgia for a specific character type - Clint being Clint for example but there was no 'Yippe-ki-yay Mother Fucker' lines from Willis nor are the other actors really that associated with the action genre.

There are lots of gun fights and some tense moments here and there.  I particularly enjoyed watching Helen Mirren with a machine gun, though it was pretty obvious she had no idea what she was doing with the thing,  and I always enjoy John Malkovich's performances.

Not a bad way to spend an evening.
